A West Virginia State Parks maintenance worker’s office is in the “great outdoors”. A maintenance worker performs a wide variety of duties necessary for keeping our state park facilities well-kept and inviting. Duties include performing a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled tasks to properly care for the many facilities, some of which are historic in nature, and keep the acres and acres of developed grounds in beautiful condition.

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of the operation of lawn maintenance equipment, tractors, and power tools, ability to drive and operate a truck,
  • Ability to perform limited work in carpentry, plumbing and other mechanical skills, ability to perform a variety of routine unskilled tasks involving the care and maintenance of buildings, grounds and utilities,
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more, ability to learn quickly and perform efficiently
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

West Virginia State Parks’ Lifeguard:

Imagine spending your summer on the deck of a pool in a beautiful state park! A lifeguard at one of the state park swimming pools provides a critical service by performing public safety work at the state park’s indoor pools, outdoor pools, and beaches. Lifeguards must have a thorough knowledge of lifesaving methods, water rescue practices, and first-aid practices with emphasis on resuscitation methods, and outstanding ability as a swimmer.

Requirements:

  • Possess a current lifeguarding certificate issued by the American Red Cross, BSA, the YMCA, or the YWCA.
  • Also necessary are the possession of a current certificate in basic first aid and must possess a current certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A West Virginia State Parks’ Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent is a full-time career park management position that oversees the operation, management and protection of a State Park, State Forest or Rail Trail. Facilities can range from complex lodge and resort parks that include lodges, cabins, golf courses, restaurants and conference facilities, cabin and vacation parks that include cabins and campgrounds, to smaller day use parks, state forests, and state park rail trails.
