Employees feel some of the jobs are already being taken over by AI and, if they don’t upgrade soon enough, they would become redundant, the report said

Job displacement because of technology has become a major concern for around 75 percent of professionals in India, with artificial intelligence and machine learning emerging as the most in-demand skills for upskilling in the current financial year, The Economic Times said citing a report by skilling platform Great Learning.

Employees feel some of the jobs are already being taken over by AI and, if they don’t upgrade soon enough, they will become redundant, the report stated.

The biggest impact of this disruption is likely to be felt by younger professionals as around 83 percent of the entry-level respondents of the survey feel their jobs could be the first casualty, ET said. Moreover, 48 percent of senior employees with over 17 years of experience also fear the tech disruption, while a whopping 90 percent of all the professionals in the automobile sector feel AI could have an impact on their jobs, the newspaper reported.

These fears could probably explain why, in a survey reported by Moneycontrol in July, respondents said machine learning and Python have become the most sought-after skills in IT companies for generative AI-related jobs.

The trend reflects the growing importance of these skills in developing advanced AI solutions and frameworks, experts said.

The report, released by hiring platform Indeed, said about 42 percent of Gen AI jobs in India mention “machine learning”, while 40 percent ask for “Python” as the most wanted skill for AI jobs.

Companies such as IBM, Coforge, L&T Technology Services, and Happiest Minds are actively seeking professionals skilled in machine learning, data science, and cloud engineering.

In another report by Moneycontrol, a survey of software professionals found that AI expertise significantly improves the chances of employability.

“Nearly all respondents in India (99%) believe this skill makes them more attractive candidates, underlining the growing importance of AI across various fields,” a report by Microsoft-owned developer platform GitHub, which was released on August 21, said.
