HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – While artificial intelligence is still relatively new, it is popping up as a tool in different industries.

James Madison University mathematics professor and AI author Hala Nelson said while she thinks certain jobs will be replaced with artificial intelligence, implementation will depend on how much will be invested into building the infrastructures for AI.

“I don’t think we are there yet, I don’t think we are close to being there,” Nelson said. “I think we are just beginning now from what I see in organizations, industries, the people developing the technology, the vendors.”

Nelson said AI already plays a role with job applications as well as building resumes as well as as used by companies to read submitted resumes.

“AI is building the resume and the application is getting sent, and on the other side is AI is being used to shift through the first round of resumes. We are getting to the level where it is AI talking to AI,” Nelson said.

The professor also said industries that could be impacted or completely switched over to A.I. in the future include customer service and translating.

“Proofreading, marketing, telemarketing — I do not think there will be any industry that will not be affected, at least in terms of assistance,” Nelson said.

Nelson recommended learning more about AI and how it works if you are skeptical or unfamiliar with it.

“If you think there is a part of your job that could be automated or AI-assisted, somebody is already working on that and the tools might already be out there,” Nelson said.

Whether you are looking for a job, currently working or are a student, Nelson said to think about how your job or field could be impacted by AI down the line.
