Generative AI and machine learning courses have surged in popularity, with Coursera reporting a 1,648 per cent increase in AI enrolments and a significant rise in other tech courses across India

A thirst for knowledge or economic necessity is driving engineers to continuously upgrade their skills. While many technical institutes now offer courses in data analysis and artificial intelligence, online platforms like Coursera and Udemy have provided short and degree courses for freshers and professionals for over a decade. A survey by Great Learning reveals that 89 per cent of engineers aim to acquire hard skills this year, with AI/ML being highly sought after.

Among them, 86 per cent show a particular interest in Generative AI. Anurag Gupta, co-founder of STEMROBO, highlights that as industries embrace automation, data analysis, and innovative technologies, the demand for AI-skilled engineers is rising rapidly. He predicts that nearly 1 million AI-related jobs will be available in India by 2030, stressing the need for early exposure to AI and STEM education to help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Courses such as Python programming, algorithms, artificial neural networks, data analysis, Microsoft Excel, SQL, and cybersecurity are now the most sought-after skills. Coursera alone has seen a 1,648 per cent increase in Generative AI course enrolments over the past year, with machine learning courses witnessing an 80-82 per cent rise. Other popular technology courses also saw a 20-25 per cent increase in enrolments in India over the past 12 months.
