As the world continues its rapid technological transformation, New Jersey stands at the threshold of an unprecedented opportunity: harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to drive economic growth, improve public services, and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.

AI is no longer the futuristic vision we once saw in science fiction. It is a reality that shapes everything from healthcare to transportation. The question now is how New Jersey can seize this moment to become a leader in AI innovation while ensuring that the technology serves the broader public good.

One obvious area where AI can make a difference is in job creation. Despite fears that automation will lead to widespread unemployment, a World Economic Forum report has already estimated that by 2025, an impressive 97 million new roles are projected to emerge from the use of AI, far outweighing projections for job displacement. It will also transform the tasks that workers complete across New Jersey’s diverse economy, which spans pharmaceuticals, finance, logistics, manufacturing, and education, all of which are uniquely positioned to benefit from AI innovations.

By investing in AI education for all students, from K-12 through higher education, the state will cultivate a workforce prepared to engage with and build on these new technologies. By fostering AI research and development in our four-year universities, New Jersey will create a talent pipeline with the skills and creativity to invent the next generation of problem-solving AI tools and fill high-demand roles across the industry spectrum.

Similarly, we must invest in our community colleges, ensuring equitable access to the AI education and training that will be needed to fill jobs that don’t require an advanced degree. Community colleges will also be vital to quickly and nimbly providing opportunities for all workers to obtain new AI skills as they emerge, and to retrain workers whose jobs do disappear. Together, we can drive economic growth while ensuring that local communities share in the benefits.

Beyond the economy, AI will be a powerful tool for addressing New Jersey’s most pressing challenges.

AI will revolutionize patient care, improving diagnostics and enabling predictive health management, which will reduce strain on the state’s healthcare systems. Hospitals and healthcare providers in New Jersey have already begun experimenting with AI for disease detection and personalized treatment plans, improving patient outcomes while lowering costs. By supporting AI-driven healthcare initiatives, the state will further position itself as a leader in this transformative field.

Transportation is another area ripe for AI disruption. AI will help manage traffic flow, optimize public transportation, and improve safety through advancements in autonomous vehicles. New Jersey can pilot smart city initiatives, leveraging AI to reduce emissions and improve the quality of life for commuters. From real-time data on traffic patterns to predictive maintenance of infrastructure, AI will enable the state to plan better and respond more efficiently to urban challenges.

However, alongside these opportunities come ethical challenges that must be carefully navigated.

AI raises concerns about privacy, bias, and accountability. New Jersey must ensure that these systems are transparent and equitable. Legislation that addresses data privacy, promotes algorithmic fairness, and protects workers displaced by automation will be key to AI’s responsible development. New Jersey will lead the way in crafting policies that balance innovation with ethical considerations, ensuring that AI serves all of its residents rather than deepening social inequalities.

And NJ is well on its way to becoming a national leader in AI. The NJ AI Hub, a partnership between the state and Princeton University, is already bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and companies to advance development in the AI field. The Next New Jersey Program, another AI initiative, will award tax credits to businesses in the AI space to promote economic growth and new discoveries.

Also on the horizon is a report from the Artificial Intelligence Task Force, spearheaded by New Jersey’s Chief AI Strategist Dr. Beth Noveck, which will provide needed recommendations on what steps New Jersey can take to encourage the responsible and equitable proliferation of AI technologies.

This is a great start, but there is still much more to do.

To ensure that New Jersey is adequately prepared to be a responsible steward of AI innovation, the Senate Legislative Oversight Committee will meet tomorrow, October 21st, to hear from lawmakers, educators, and industry experts on how to position NJ as a national AI leader.

New Jersey’s size, diversity, and proximity to major metropolitan centers make it an ideal proving ground for AI applications. But to truly harness the potential of AI, the state must act boldly and strategically. By fostering public-private partnerships, investing in AI research and education, and prioritizing ethical governance, New Jersey can become a leader in AI innovation—reaping the economic benefits while ensuring a more equitable and prosperous future for all.

Now is the time to think big.
