Google to introduce training programs to empower workers with future-ready skills – ET CIO

Google is stepping up efforts to help workers adapt to an AI-driven world, aiming to give people the tools they need to thrive in changing job markets. As governments work on new rules for artificial intelligence, Google is focusing on workforce training to ease concerns about job displacement and show how AI can open new opportunities.

One major effort is Grow with Google, a program that’s already helped over 1 million people earn certificates in areas like IT support and data analysis. Now, it’s adding AI-focused courses, including ones specifically for teachers. CEO Sundar Pichai has committed $120 million to expand these education programs, helping workers build skills for AI-powered roles.

“Getting more people comfortable with AI creates better policies and new opportunities, it’s a win-win,” said Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs. He also highlighted Google’s partnerships with community colleges to train people for jobs like data centre construction, now with added AI training.

Google’s push comes as studies suggest most jobs will be impacted by AI in some way, though only a few will be completely replaced. To better understand these changes, Google brought in economist David Autor, who believes AI tools can make job training more engaging and effective.

The message is clear, Google wants workers to see AI as an opportunity, not a threat. By offering practical training and partnering with schools and communities, the company aims to help people prepare for the jobs of tomorrow. “If we can support efforts to get workers ready for AI, that’s our mission,” Walker said.
