SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — An Illinois artificial intelligence taskforce created in 2023 released a report with data on the pros and cons of the new technology.

The report mostly found the cons.

In the near future, 19% of the American workforce could lose their jobs to AI according to the report. Some of the most vulnerable include teachers, legal aides, software engineers, writers and creative artists.

It also showed that the advanced technology could reduce the quality of education and risk civil liberties.

Many experts say AI is here to stay, and warn that the next few years will be critical for how the technology will impact everyday Americans.

“There are just amazing advances being done in medicine in astronomy and physics,” said Richard Shavzin of SAG-AFTRA and the ILAFL-CIO. “But left unchecked, generative AI has enormous potential to do immeasurable harm.”

The report found that AI that’s used to filter job applications have been racially profiling, denying applications based on their marginalized status.

Back in 2023, AI deepfakes that were used to make fake political announcements or create child pornography were banned in Illinois.

Lawmakers have yet to create any legislation based on the report, but say this is the perfect time to act.

“We can’t afford to wait,” said State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid (D-Bridgeview). “AI is here and its impact will only continue to grow. We have an opportunity to shape its future, but that requires us to act decisively and boldly.”
