Can Google’s New Tool Predict Your Tech Career Path? – Dice

Can AI help you predict your career path?

Google is testing that idea via its new Career Dreamer tool, which is billed as a Google Labs “experiment.” The UX is pretty straightforward: you input a current or previous role, along with your skills and (optionally) your industry or organization, and the tool will generate a “career identity statement” that sums up your professional self, along with potential career paths.

For example, if you input “software engineer,” along with your management and copywriting skills, Career Dreamer will show a variety of professional pathways, including cybersecurity engineer, data scientist, product owner, and engineering manager. Clicking on one of those potential roles will reveal how it overlaps with your current position. You can then find available jobs near you.

As we head into a future where AI tools can help you tinker with your resume, write your cover letter, and even surface available jobs for you, it’s important to remember that job applicants who apply a “human touch” to their application materials have the best chance of standing out. Too many tech professionals simply cut-and-paste AI output into their resumes or applications, for example, without realizing that thousands of potential rivals are doing the exact same thing—and they’ll all end up rejected by a hiring manager or recruiter who doesn’t want to see the same carbon-copy verbiage.

Deconstructing Job Postings

If you’re determined to utilize generative AI as part of your job search, you can use it to help you isolate job postings that align with your skills and interests. For example, input an interesting job posting into your chosen AI tool and ask it to:

  • Pinpoint Key Terms: Identify the most important keywords and phrases within the job description. This includes technical skills, experience requirements, and company-specific jargon.
  • Decipher Company Culture: Understand the company’s values, mission, and work environment. This helps you align your resume with their expectations.

This analysis helps you determine if the company is a good fit and how to best craft your application.

Crafting Your Resume

While specialized AI resume builders exist, you can achieve excellent results with general-purpose AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini. If you’re exploring different options, prioritize AI-powered resume builders that offer customization and template libraries.

When creating your resume, remember these key points:

  • Experiment with Prompts: Try different prompts, combine sections, and utilize as much generated content as possible.
  • Always Proofread: Generative AI can make factual errors. Thoroughly proofread your resume to ensure accuracy; don’t rely solely on the AI.
  • Provide Specifics: The quality of the output depends on the detail of your input. Be as specific as possible.

If you already have a resume, even a basic one, you can use generative AI to tailor it to a specific job description. Here’s a suggested sequence of prompts:

  • Prompt 1: Resume Tailoring: “Adapt this [JOB TITLE] role at [COMPANY] to my resume. [Paste your current resume and the target job description below.]”
  • Prompt 2: Skill Highlighting: “Based on the job description, identify the skills and roles I should emphasize in this revised resume. [Paste the resume from Prompt 1 and the job description.]”
  • Prompt 3: Role-Specific Refinement: “Rewrite my resume to position me as the ideal candidate for the [JOB TITLE] role at [COMPANY]. [Paste your resume and the job description.]”
  • Prompt 4: Adding Metrics and Refining Experience: “Incorporate relevant metrics into the experience section to demonstrate my past successes. [Paste your resume.]”

If you’re creating a resume from scratch, use this sequence of prompts:

  • Prompt 1: Resume Generation: “Create a resume for a [JOB TITLE] based on this job description. [Paste the job description from the company website.]”
  • Prompt 2: Experience Detailing: “Develop a tailored resume for this [TITLE] role at [COMPANY]. My work experience includes [LIST COMPANIES AND ROLES] for the past [X] years. For each role, provide 3-5 bullet points detailing my responsibilities [DESCRIBE RELEVANT EXPERIENCE] and include relevant metrics [ADD METRICS].”
  • Prompt 3: Keyword Integration: “Using this resume, incorporate the five most important keywords from the job description. [Paste your resume and the job description.]”
  • Prompt 4: Adding an Objective (Optional): “Rewrite this resume with an objective statement suitable for the [TITLE] role at [COMPANY]. [Paste your resume and the job description.]”

For each prompt, ensure the job description is accurately copied and pasted to provide the AI with the necessary information. You may need to experiment with different prompts or provide more specific instructions to achieve the desired results.

Keep in mind that your resume and application (and your overall career path) are ultimately unique to you; while an AI can help you make decisions about which job to pursue next, or how to write your resume, you still need to apply your own critical thought and imagination to the job-hunting process.
