US IT specialist Kyndryl offers more details of new Liverpool city region AI hub that will see the creation of 1,000 jobs in the next three years. Tony McDonough reports
Global IT giant Kyndryl has offered further detail of its new tech hub in Liverpool that will see the creation of 1,000 jobs across the city region in the next three years.
In January, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the arrival of Kyndryl in Liverpool as part of the UK’s AI (artificial intelligence) “revolution”. This is part of the UK-wide The AI Opportunities Action Plan that will see £14bn invested.
On Wednesday, US-based Kyndryl said the new tech hub will include a Kyndryl Vital Studio. This will offer a “designer-led, open and collaborative co-creation experience” that will allow customers to tackle complex and real-world business challenges.
Kyndryl Consult’s advisory services will help businesses adopt and implement AI, software and platform engineering solutions and other emerging technologies.
As part of its investment the company will expand its existing partnership with The Very Group, the Liverpool-based operator of digital retailers Very and Littlewoods.
This new multi-year agreement is designed to enhance and accelerate the retailer’s end-to-end digital capabilities. Kyndryl will provide software and platform engineering support, helping The Very Group launch new products at speed.
John Chambers, Kyndryl UK and Ireland president, said: “Liverpool’s growing reputation as a hub for digital excellence – reinforced by the success of last year’s International AI Summit – underscores our decision to invest in the region’s exceptional talent.
“This step, as well as Kyndryl’s expansion of our relationship with The Very Group, reflects Kyndryl’s commitment to nurturing the skills needed to accelerate AI adoption, advance digital transformation and drive meaningful economic growth across the UK.”
Kyndryl is a multinational business that was spun out of computer giant IBM. It designs, builds, manages, and develops large-scale information systems. The company was formed in 2021.
It is launching a new early careers programme in the UK, starting with digital technology degree apprenticeships. It adds that investing in talent is crucial for maintaining the UK’s leadership in innovation and AI adoption.

This latest announcement was welcomed by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, who added: “This is fantastic news for Liverpool city region and proof of what we can achieve when local ambition is backed by national support to attract global investment.
“I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to bring Kyndryl here, following discussions during our trade mission to New York last year. AI and digital technology are already transforming industries across the country.”
