The City of Chestermere is excited about a proposed new AI data centre to be built in the area.
The presentation from Beacon AI Centers was reported to council on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
“This is a significant economic development opportunity for the city, with Beacon proposing a $4 billion investment that would create over 300 permanent jobs along with 1200 jobs during construction,” wrote the city in a news release.
“A project this unique in nature will bolster and diversify our local economy,” said Nimish Patel, Economic Development Manager for the city.
The city added that an AI data centre will help attract and retain other tech companies in the region.
“The Beacon data centre can provide several other local benefits, including infrastructure improvements, partnership opportunities with local business, suppliers, and educational institutions, continued support for investment attraction, and sector development and diversification,” mentioned the city.
The city added that so far, it’s just a potential project with nothing confirmed.
“First, there must be a land use redesignation to allow for the development of the data centre, which, similar to a permit, has an application process it must go through,” mentioned Ty Tomasta, communications manager with the city.
StrathmoreNow has reached out to Beacon AI Centers for comment on the story.
Interested residents can learn more about Beacon during a public engagement session at Lakeside Golf Course on Tuesday, March 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
