Don’t let RTO headliners scare you. The number of remote job openings is in fact increasing (and is up by nearly two percentage points since Q3 2024)…but so is your competition.
U.S. searches for “remote jobs” have consistently remained high and hovered at 823,000 for the past few weeks, analysis of Google Trends and Semrush reveals. Even in a recent FlexJobs survey, 58% of respondents agreed that they’d be happy to sacrifice benefits like pay, vacation days, and insurance, in return for being able to work fully remotely.
However, when it comes to remote work, it’s the survival of the fittest. Not everyone will meet the criteria for the fully remote jobs, especially the higher paying roles in which you can earn $100,000 or more a year. Because the competition is strong, it’s only those who are exceptionally competent for the job, have strong domain expertise, possess future-ready skills, and are digitally and AI savvy who will succeed and win the remote job race. The remote jobs that appear to be on the rise offer some of the highest salaries, easily exceeding $150,000 to $280,000 in salary.
Surprising fact: Jobs that pay $250,000 are more likely to have fully remote work opportunities than jobs below $250,000, according to researchers at Ladders, the job site for high-paying careers.
So it only makes sense that if you wish to align yourself for lucrative remote job opportunities, you’d need to ensure you heavily invest in your own professional development and refine your expertise and breadth of experience. Even opt for a hybrid-remote job if necessary on a temporary basis, until you get to the point where you’re able to present yourself as a highly competent professional.

Beyond this, specific in-demand skills are listed in the person specification as necessary for the performance of the role. The job ad states, amongst other things:
“Strong negotiation and drafting skills (including ability to prioritize workflow, problem solve complex issues and offer practical and creative solutions), and clear and effective communication skills required.
“Strategic thinking and strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build consensus, make informed decisions, manage multiple areas of responsibility, and drive results.
“Proven track record of people management and leadership to inspire and motivate others with a focus on cross-functional collaboration in a complex, global organization.”
It’s time to up your game. If you’re ready to win the remote job market, strengthen your job-specific skills, and think outside the box of a regular professional in your industry. Push yourself to learn and achieve excellence. The more you tangibly prove your value to employers, the higher your salary will be and the more remote job opportunities will come your way.
