Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has reemerged three months after his unceremonious departure and announced he will take an expanded role at a faith-based AI company.

The 64-year-old Gelsinger retired abruptly in December after clashing with Intel’s board of directors over his plans to turnaround the iconic but struggling Hillsboro semiconductor manufacturer.

In a statement this week, Boulder-based Gloo announced Gelsinger will serve as executive chairman and head of technology.

Gelsinger is a a longtime investor in Gloo, which provides cloud technology and AI products for Christian churches and faith-based organizations. He’s served on its board for nearly 10 years including five as chairman. Gelsinger is also a co-founder of Transforming the Bay With Christ, a nonprofit founded to increase the number of Christians in the Bay Area.

“Technology has the power to connect, uplift and transform lives — but only when built with purpose,” Gelsinger said in the announcement. “At Gloo, we are uniting innovation with faith principles to ensure technology serves people, strengthens communities, and becomes a force for good.”

Gloo is a leading faith-based company that works to make technology a force for good and “help people and communities flourish through its platform and values-based AI,” according to a Monday announcement. The company wants to produce tools for churches and other organisations in the highly fragmented U.S. “faith ecosystem.” Churches have been slow to adopt AI and other digital tools. Gloo’s tools — like chatbots and AI assistants — aim to help faith organizations expand their reach and “deepen their engagement.”

The company sees an “urgent need to embed values directly into AI,” according to the statement announcing Gelsinger’s expanded role. “Gloo is positioned for significant growth while shaping the future of technology for faith and human flourishing.”

At Gloo, Gelsinger will spearhead efforts to build one of the world’s first vertical industry clouds for faith and flourishing and advancing values-aligned AI called Gloo AI.

“I am excited to partner with Pat at this next level as we shape technology for good, release the collective strength of the faith ecosystem and serve those who serve,”  Gloo CEO Scott Beck writes in the announcement.

Gelsinger worked most of his four-decade tech career at Intel, returning as CEO in 2021 with an ambitious plan to rebuild the faltering company. But under his leadership, Intel endured several quarters of major losses. Last year, the company reduced its global workforce by 15% despite winning large government contracts through the CHIPS and Science Act.

This month, Intel announced tech investor and Cadence founder Lip-Bu Tan is the company’s new CEO. The 65-year-old Tan is a leader at his Berkeley church, according to Intel.

The Portland Business Journal reports Gelsinger will speak next month at Newberg’s George Fox University on the topic of “AI, Ethical Innovation and Faith.”
