The Ten Strains America Keeps Picking: A List of Lists

Every cannabis publication has a “best strains” list, and every list is somebody’s opinion. So I did something less glamorous: I collected seven of them, took only the top ten from each, and counted. This isn’t my list. It’s what the other lists agree on, which is a different and more honest question.

How the meta-list was built

I used seven lists published in 2026:

  • The Marijuana Herald, October 2026 (built on Headset sales data, state sales and Leafly).

  • Leafly “100 Best Cannabis Strains“, updated July 2026 (ranked by sales and search popularity).

  • This Is Why I’m High, all-time composite, April 2026.

  • This Is Why I’m High, 2026 trend index, September 2026 (Leafly Trending, Weedmaps Q1, Leafly editorial).

  • Leafly Picks, October 2026 (explicitly unranked).

  • THCa By Mail, Top 10 of 2026 (a retailer, published December 2025).

  • The Stoner Review, Top 10 of 2026, updated October 4, 2026.

Scoring: strains were ordered first by how many lists included them, then by a Borda score (10 points for a list’s #1 down to 1 for #10; the unranked Leafly list gives every strain a flat 5.5). I excluded sources that were derivative or purely marketing copy.

Four caveats before the list. The lists mix sales, search, editorial taste and retail marketing. The Herald and Leafly share data sources, so they aren’t fully independent. Popularity is not quality. And Leafly’s THC numbers are averages across lab results; your jar will differ. I’m also paraphrasing reviewer comments from Leafly’s strain pages rather than quoting them, since those are anonymous excerpts and not a survey.

The Top Ten

1. Blue Dream (4 lists, Borda 37)

On: Herald, Leafly 100, TIWIH all-time, Stoner Review.

Potency: About 21% THC, no CBD.

Combination: Blueberry × Haze.

Taste: Blueberry, sweet, earthy, floral. Dominant terpenes: myrcene, pinene, caryophyllene.

What people say: Reviewers praise its balance, with creativity and energy without a heavy body load. A recurring complaint is paranoia at high doses.

2. Permanent Marker (4 lists, Borda 31)

On: Herald, TIWIH trend index, THCa By Mail, Stoner Review.

Potency: About 25% THC.

Combination: (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy, from Seed Junky; Leafly’s Strain of the Year for 2023.

Taste: Chemical, ammonia, gassy, floral, with a soapy-candy edge. Terpenes: myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene.

What people say: The marker-pen aroma is the signature. Users describe a tingly, relaxed but still motivated high, and several mention relief of pain and stress.

3. Runtz (4 lists, Borda 24)

On: Herald, Leafly 100, TIWIH all-time, Stoner Review (as Runtz variants).

Potency: About 21% THC.

Combination: Zkittlez × Gelato, from Cookies Fam; Leafly Strain of the Year 2020.

Taste: Tree fruit, apricot, candy-sweet. Terpenes: caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene.

What people say: A mood-lifter that hits fast and strong, talkative and giggly. The downsides people name are anxiety, dry mouth and headaches.

4. Gelato (4 lists, Borda 22)

On: Herald, Leafly 100, TIWIH all-time, and credited via Stoner Review’s “Gary Payton / Gelato 33” entry, which is the loosest of the four.

Potency: About 21% THC.

Combination: Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC, from Cookies Fam (2014); Leafly Strain of the Year 2018.

Taste: Sweet, floral, a little pepper, creamy. Terpenes: caryophyllene, limonene, humulene.

What people say: A strong body buzz that many use for anxiety. Several reviewers say it feels more indica than its hybrid label suggests.

5. Wedding Cake (3 lists, Borda 22)

On: Herald, Leafly 100, TIWIH all-time.

Potency: About 24% THC with roughly 1% CBG.

Combination: Triangle Kush × Animal Mints; Leafly Strain of the Year 2019.

Taste: Vanilla, pepper, butter, earthy. Terpenes: caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene.

What people say: Popular for night-time pain relief and mood without overstimulation. Negatives: anxiety, dizziness and dry mouth for some, plus heavy munchies.

6. GG4 / Original Glue (3 lists, Borda 19)

On: Herald, Leafly 100, TIWIH all-time.

Potency: About 20% THC.

Combination: Chem’s Sister × Sour Dubb, with Chocolate Diesel in some accounts. Leafly’s FAQ says it’s “currently the most popular strain.”

Taste: Pungent, earthy, pine, herbal. Terpenes: caryophyllene, myrcene, limonene.

What people say: Couch-lock, sleep, pain and mood relief. Reviewers value its reliable potency.

7. Sour Diesel (3 lists, Borda 12)

On: Herald, Leafly 100, TIWIH all-time.

Potency: About 19% THC.

Combination: Chemdawg × Super Skunk.

Taste: Diesel, chemical, skunk. Terpenes: caryophyllene, myrcene, limonene.

What people say: The classic cerebral energizer: uplifting and talkative, popular for mood and daytime use. The flavor divides people.

8. Lemon Cherry Gelato (2 lists, Borda 14)

On: TIWIH trend index, THCa By Mail.

Potency: About 20% THC.

Combination: GSC × Sunset Sherbet, or a Gelato phenotype with possible Runtz lineage.

Taste: Lemon, citrus, berry, sweet, a little pepper. Terpenes: caryophyllene, linalool, limonene.

What people say: Creative clarity and a giggly, social buzz. Batch variability shows up in reviews, with some users reporting dizziness or headaches.

9. Super Boof (2 lists, Borda 13)

On: Herald, THCa By Mail.

Potency: 26-28% THC, the highest on the list.

Combination: Black Cherry Punch × Tropicana Cookies; Leafly Strain of the Year 2024.

Taste: Grapefruit, citrus, orange, diesel. Myrcene-dominant.

What people say: Exceptional flavor, a balanced hybrid that’s giggly and focused. Reviewers consistently say it’s a daytime strain, not a bedtime one.

10. Zoap (2 lists, Borda 12.5)

On: Leafly Picks, THCa By Mail.

Potency: About 21% THC with roughly 1% CBG.

Combination: Rainbow Sherbet × Pink Guava, from DEO Farms in Oakland.

Taste: Apricot, chemical, apple, sweet and floral with a soapy note. Terpenes: caryophyllene, limonene, humulene.

What people say: Pain relief and heavy munchies. The soapy terpene profile is polarizing.

What the list tells me, and where it’s shaky

Blue Dream is #1 in every variation I tested, which includes dropping the retailer lists and adding the Herald’s July and September lists. Wedding Cake, GG4, Gelato, Runtz and Sour Diesel stayed in the top seven every time.

Permanent Marker is the swing strain. It’s #2 with the retailer lists in, but slides to roughly #4-7 without them. Treat its rank as soft.

The #10 slot is the softest of all. Zoap got there on the strength of an unranked Leafly list and a retailer’s list. Gary Payton (11 Borda points), GSC (10), OG Kush (10) and Animal Face (9) are all within reach, depending on the weighting. If you believe a retailer’s picks shouldn’t count, Zoap is the first to go.

A sales reality check helps. The Herald’s September state-by-state data (Headset plus state reports) shows the national list doesn’t match what’s actually moving locally: Blue Dream leads in California and New York, Runtz in Michigan, Wedding Cake in Washington, Animal Face in Maryland, Sour Diesel in Illinois, Gelato in New Mexico, Bananas in Massachusetts and Ohio, Black Label in Colorado and Nevada, and Hash Burger in Oregon. A “national” ranking is an average of very different markets, and your state may disagree with all of it.

One pattern worth noticing: the older list-toppers (Blue Dream, Sour Diesel, GG4) are heavily sales-driven, and the newer arrivals (Permanent Marker, Zoap, Lemon Cherry Gelato) lean on trend lists. And almost everything on the list descends from Cookies, Gelato or OG-family genetics, so the “top ten” are less ten different plants than a few extended families. That’s a note from This Is Why I’m High’s analysis of the gene pool, and it matches the lineages above.
