Study: AI creating jobs, not cutting them for small businesses – WBBJ

JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) – Artificial intelligence is changing the way Americans work — and for many, that raises a big question. Could AI take their jobs? New research suggests the technology may be creating opportunities instead.

While AI can feel like an uncertain future for workers, with questions about which jobs could change or even disappear, the report finds small businesses are nearly eight times more likely to report AI-driven job creation than job losses.

“There’s still debate out there about how AI will impact every job throughout the country, but I think this report is a reason for optimism,” said Jordan Crenshaw, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Crenshaw says that’s because the technology can help businesses work more efficiently and reach more customers.

“What we’ve found is that AI for small businesses is actually a job creator and not a job replacer,” Crenshaw said.

According to the report, 47% of small businesses say AI has helped them add employees, compared to 6% that say it has reduced staffing.

Crenshaw says businesses are also investing in their current workforce, helping employees learn how to use these tools.

“90% of small businesses that used AI experienced an increase in hiring in the last year, so a tool that is helping them get more efficient and get more sales is now leading to more jobs,” Crenshaw said.

In Tennessee, the report points to another concern — access.

“In fact, three quarters of small businesses in Tennessee expressed concern that losing their ability to use AI would harm their ability to grow, so that’s why they need certainty,” Crenshaw said.

Crenshaw says the challenge now is making sure small businesses have a voice in the policy decisions that could shape their future.
