Dr. Odis Johnson Jr. has been named the Edmund W. Gordon Chair for Policy Research and Evaluation at the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
Johnson is currently the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Social Policy and STEM Equity at Johns Hopkins University. In this new role, he is expected to guide policy research at the assessment organization with the goal of advancing equitable access to quality education and fair assessment for learners.
The ETS Research Institute develops frameworks for innovative personalized assessments that enable learners to demonstrate the full spectrum of their skills and competencies, generate crucial insights, and inform educational policies globally.
The chair is named after Gordon, a prominent psychologist and education researcher. In 2011, Diverse honored Gordon, who turned 103 earlier this year, with the Dr. John Hope Franklin award.
“Odis’s career is a demonstration of his commitment to addressing critical societal issues through rigorous and impact-focused research,” said Dr. Kadriye Ercikan, vice president of research at ETS. “As the Gordon Chair, Odis will provide invaluable insights and leadership, guiding our efforts to enhance educational access and fairness. His expertise will not only contribute to groundbreaking research, but he will also mentor the next generation of scholars dedicated to equity and social justice in education.”
Dr. Michael T. Nettles, previously held the Edmund W. Gordon Chair at ETS. Nettles, who left ETS in 2023, is currently a full professor with tenure and endowed chair of predictive analytics and psychometrics at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.
