American cloud-based software company Salesforce is reportedly cutting more than 1,000 jobs while hiring workers to sell new artificial intelligence (AI) products.Ā

Workers affected by the cuts will be able to apply for other jobs internally, according to Bloomberg News, citing a person familiar with the matter. Bloomberg reportedly added that it was unable to determine which sectors the cuts were focused on.Ā

According to Reuters, Salesforce had 72,682 employees as of the end of January last year. In December last year, chief executive officer Marc Benioff reportedly said that the company had closed more than 1,000 paid deals for Agentforce,Ā its platform for creating AI-powered virtual representatives.

AI is revolutionising industries by automating tasks and improving efficiency. However, this technological advancement also raises concerns about job displacement. In a recentĀ Ipsos predictions 2025 survey, it revealed that nearly 73% of Malaysians fear that AI will lead to significant job losses, surpassing the global average of 65%.Ā The survey surveyed 23,271 people across 33 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and more.Ā

The survey revealed that Malaysia is among the nations most concerned about job displacement due to AI, with Thailand and Singapore following behind at 66% and 59% respectively. Indonesia and Philippines show even greater anxiety with 85% and 81% of the population believing that AI will lead to job loss.Ā Despite these fears, the survey revealed that optimism about the potential for AI to create new jobs remain strong.

With the rise inĀ AI, tech giants have upped their digital game with their own take on the phenomenon. In earlier last week, Google introduced “Gemini 2.0 Flash” to its Gemini app, an AIĀ chatbot developed by the company. The company stated that the model “delivers fast responses and stronger performance across a number of key benchmarks, providing everyday help with tasks like brainstorming, learning or writing.”

Salesforce isn’t the only company to be cutting staff jobs in recent times. In January this year,Ā Meta was set to cut an estimate of 5% of its global workforce, specifically the company’s lowest performing staff.Ā According to theĀ British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), boss Mark Zuckerberg informed workers in a memo that he has decided to speed up the company’s regular performance-based cuts ahead of an intense year. He reportedly added that Meta would restore the roles in the latter part of 2025.

The company, which employs an estimate of 72,000 people worldwide, did not highlight how the cuts will be dispensed worldwide. Roughly 3,600 people could be affected by the cuts and will receive a generous severance.Ā
