Jobs and AI: Will I be out of work? What opportunities does AI offer?

Artificial Intelligence is redefining the world of work. But while some traditional jobs are at risk of disappearing, new challenges arise requiring new skills and adaptation. Which are the most impacted sectors?

Chile has become one of the most attractive markets for the implementation of Artificial Intelligence solutions, thanks to its growing technology ecosystem and a constantly evolving digital talent. To illustrate further, the Latin American AI Index 2024 (ILIA 2024), prepared by the National AI Centre (CENIA) and ECLAC, with the support of international organizations such as Google, Microsoft, and UNESCO, ranks our country in the first place as a pioneer in the region.

This obviously brings consequences. While some traditional jobs are at risk of disappearing, roles that require new skills and adaptation are emerging. In this sense, the leading Chilean scaleup in RPA, Rocketbot, estimates that 69% of jobs in our country will be automated, which opens up new horizons. However, just as opportunities for qualified professionals are emerging, there are also sectors where automation threatens conventional jobs.

According to the Future of Jobs Report 2025 published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) last January, technological disruption will impact 22% of global jobs by 2030. This means that roughly one-fifth of all current jobs will be transformed or redefined due to automation and advances in AI. During this period, it is estimated that 170 million new jobs will be created, while 92 million will be displaced, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs.

Among the World Economic Forum’s projections, it is indicated that a series of jobs are in serious danger of disappearing between 2025 and 2030 due to automation and massive use of AI, like GPT Chat. The most affected jobs include: cashiers, bank employees, graphic designers, administrative assistants, executive secretaries, postal service officers, print workers, data capture employees, inventory managers, and legal officials.

“A couple of years ago, the bulk of RPA (Robotic Process Automation) implementations were used to automatically operate the repetitive typing of invoices or documents. Today, with the maturity of AI, these solutions are practically replacing the entire data entry flow,” explains Juan Jorge Herrera, CEO of Rocketbot.

The same report from the World Economic Forum indicates that it is anticipated that advances in AI, robotics and energy systems – especially in renewable energy and environmental engineering – will increase the demand for specialized positions in these areas.

In this regard, the CEO of Rocketbot emphasizes that, “the key is for businesses and workers to understand that AI is not here to displace them, but to expand opportunities. Those who manage to reinvent themselves and support technology will play a leading role in this new era”.

“Trends such as generative AI and rapid technological changes are transforming sectors and labor markets, and this creates unprecedented opportunities, but also serious risks,” said Till Leopold, Head of Work, Wages and Job Creation at the World Economic Forum in the aforementioned report from the beginning of the year.

This is how, although it is expected that the demand for technological skills in AI, big data, networks and cybersecurity will increase most rapidly, human skills such as analytical thinking, cognitive abilities, resilience, leadership and collaboration will continue to be fundamental basic competencies.

Among the new job opportunities are:

  • Prompt Engineering

The rise of generative AIs, capable of generating texts, images, and even processing large volumes of data, lays the groundwork for the emergence of a very particular profile: the “prompt engineer”. These professionals specialize in designing the appropriate prompts for the AI to deliver optimal results aligned with specific business objectives. “AI will be as effective as its prompts. That’s where linguistic knowledge and the ability to structure precise questions become essential”, Herrera details.

  • Specialists in Communication and Humanities

Paradoxically, in an increasingly technological world, humanistic skills are taking a leading role. Communicators, journalists, and professionals focusing on language could benefit from the growing adoption of AI.

  • AI Ethics and Governance Analysts

The rapid implementation of intelligent systems in critical sectors (financial, health, transportation, etc.) creates an urgency to regulate and monitor their behavior. Here is where positions related to AI ethics and governance are born. These professionals combine technical knowledge with an understanding of legal and social implications, ensuring that technology adheres to standards of transparency, privacy, and accountability.

The transformation driven by AI is dizzying, but rather than eliminating jobs, it’s redefining them. As Bill Gates has pointed out, “the future of work is not about eliminating jobs, but transforming them”. The real challenge is to adapt and harness AI as a tool for progress, instead of fearing it.
