The 420 holiday, or the spring weed holiday, is known as a smokers day, but this is when most people celebrate cannabis culture and history. For the last 10 years though, another consumption holiday has been celebrated in the summer, mostly in legalized states to the west.
The 710 holiday, or Dab Day, is observed on 7/10 or more specifically, at 7:10 (morning and night) on the day of July 10. It gets its name and purpose from a cultural codename for all things weed concentrate.
That’s right. 710 is OIL. That is, the three-letter combination inverted or turned upside down looks like the three-numbers. It has become the de facto symbol for any type of oil derived from cannabis.
As your Cannabis Life reporter, I’m here to guide you on the basics about all things weed. Here’s what you need to know about this holiday that is growing in popularity year over year.
What is 710?
As a consumer new to the use of vape cartridges after years of discrimination, I have come to understand the convenience (and discretion) of weed concentrates and their roll in the community. Concentrates can be more versatile and convenient than simply sticking to using buds and flowers. You can smoke them, add them to food, drinks or even cosmetics.
These highly potent concentrates, such as hash oil, shatter, wax and resin come in different textures and are smoked using special equipment. 710 is the day of celebrating the development of these technologies by the producers and consumers that appreciate these methods of cannabis use.
Some enthusiasts prefer to use concentrates because of they have an elevated presence of terpenes and cannabinoids, giving the smoke way more flavor and complexity. Others enjoy the major jump in potency, and the ability to use less product overall.
Celebrating 710
Celebration can look like simply “dabbing” with friends or your local cannabis community, which gives the 710 holiday the nickname of Dab Day.
Dabbing has grown as a popular way of consuming weed over the last few years, adding to the holiday’s influence. It is a bit controversial, because dab wax is made using a chemical solvent like butane or propane. But what is dabbing anyway?
It is essentially putting a small amount of weed concentrate onto a heated surface and allowing it to vaporize, but as you can imagine, this can look like many different actions using various pieces of equipment. There are dab rings, dab stems, torches, bong attachments, and many other devices that are needed to enjoy vaporizing these concentrates.
If you’re not into dabbing, using your concentrates to infuse food or drinks is also an option. The many types of concentrates, from tinctures to vape pens, can be found at legal weed stores scattered throughout New Jersey.
Some legalized states such as Arizona, Oregon and Colorado have developed large celebrations or contests (710 cups) centered around July 10, but there is no one event to gather at yet.
Celebrating is as simple as consuming your concentrates on July 10, at either 7:10 a.m. or p.m.
