Cannabis regulators have recalled a weed product after they determined it had insects and human hair in it.

The recall letter by the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission was issued Monday, stemming from a complaint filed July 18 about Green Medicine NJ, a cultivator that sells the products as Green Joy.

Regulators said 15 packages were sampled and 12 were found to have insects and one contained human hair. The product was sold in dispensaries as “flower and pre-rolls … in jars and boxes of various sizes,” the CRC said.

Customer can return affected products back to the store they bought them from for a full refund.

The affected batch numbers are as follows. The batch/lot number is traditionally on the cannabis container beneath a barcode.

As early as last week, sources in the medical marijuana patient community were talking about a cultivator that had shipped out products with insects in it. Medical patients had also previously pointed out mold in cannabis products when the industry debuted in 2021.

The recall comes at a sensitive time for the medical cannabis patient community as they’ve continued to protest against legislators who made it a crime to grow weed without a commercial license.

The patient community has advocated for the right to grow their own weed, saying medical marijuana is expensive, and the industry doesn’t have the products they need and lacks the quality they expected for their medical conditions. Senate President Nicholas Scutari, D-Union, has opposed allowing it.

Cannabis regulators said their investigation into the cultivator is ongoing. Green Medicine NJ did not immediately return a message for comment.
