N.J. plan to make it harder to see people’s criminal records rejected by Murphy

Gov. Phil Murphy has vetoed a bipartisan expungement bill, arguing that reforms recently put in place covered some of what the legislation sought to address.

The bill, A3881, would have stopped a person’s criminal history from showing up during a background check if the charge was in the process of being expunged.

Murphy’s veto came after a settlement was reached last week between the Office of Public Defender and the State Police following a dispute over expungements not being processed by law enforcement in a timely manner.
