No. 1 Cardinal Newman 56, No. 4 Arroyo 13: The undefeated and top-seeded Cardinals went off for 56 unanswered points on Tuesday as they booked their trip to the North Coast Section Division 2 championship game.

Trailing 7-0 for most of the first quarter, Newman finally hit paydirt and went on a quick 14-0 run to take the lead for good. Nicole Hayeems accounted for six total touchdowns, four through the air and two more on the ground. Her sister, Naomi, caught three of those, while Colbie Piehl had the other.

Hannah Maida had two rushing scores, one of which was for 46 yards, and Mae Trione added another. On the defensive side of the ball, Newman tallied three interceptions, by Molly Friedman, Juliet Diehl and Makenna Homan.

The Cardinals (23-0) will now head to Clayton Valley Charter on Thursday for the title game against second-seeded Acalanes. The Dons (17-2) won 19-13 in a tough battle with No. 3 Saint Mary’s-Albany in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

Thursday’s championship game starts at 5 p.m.

Healdsburg’s Brooklyn Viramontes has booked her ticket to the Northern California regional tournament.

Viramontes, who has been the Greyhounds’ ace all year long, shot a 74 on Monday at Windsor Golf Club to become one of the North Coast Section’s top individual qualifiers and will head to Berkeley Country Club next Monday for the regional championship.

Cardinal Newman’s Ella Foley shot a 75 to finish one shot from advancing. Vintage’s Brooke Gongora had the third-best score among North Bay golfers with an 80.

Viramontes finished sixth in last week’s NCS Division 2 qualifier to claim her spot in this week’s NCS finale.

The top nine individual participants at next week’s NorCal tournament who aren’t members of the top three teams will qualify for the CIF state championships later this month at Pebble Beach. In order to advance to state, Viramontes must qualify in this category.
