IMF head says AI is a ‘tsunami’ threat to job market – LinkedIn

The biggest threat to your job is not AI.
It is an employer that invests in the technology and not in you.

Amazon cut 30,000 jobs and increased its AI budget to $200 billion.

Walmart trained 1.6 million people on how to use AI.

Same technology. Opposite bet.
Two of the largest employers in America read the same moment and did the exact opposite thing.

Start with Amazon.

❌ 14,000 corporate roles cut in October. Another 16,000 in January 2026.
❌ Thirty thousand gone since the autumn.
❌ Planned AI spend for 2026 doubled to around $200 billion. Most of it data centres.
❌ Andy Jassy told staff he expects the corporate workforce to shrink as AI makes work more efficient.

The money went to machines.
The bill went to people.

Walmart employs 2.1 million. It read the same moment differently.

✅ Free AI training for 1.6 million staff across the US and Canada.
✅ Certification in OpenAI tools opened to every US associate.
✅ A chief executive who says he cannot think of one job AI will not change.
✅ A chief people officer who put it plainly: “Technology will power our future. But our associates will lead it.”

To be fair, Walmart has not promised anyone a job for life. No one has.

The difference is what each company decided the money was for.

One bought capacity.
The other built capability.

Here is why this matters to your career, not just to theirs.

You cannot control which column your employer sits in.
You can control which one you are ready for.

So ask one question at your next leadership meeting.

What are we spending on our people this year, and what are we spending on the tools?

The gap between those two numbers is your company’s real AI strategy. Everything else is a slide.

Both companies agree AI will change every job.
Only one of them assumes the same people will still be doing them.

♻️ If this resonated, share it. Someone in your network is already wondering the same thing about AI.
