Anthropic plans to expand its funding for public-benefit initiatives as its business grows, committing 5 percent of its shares to a new fund that could receive additional equity as the company’s valuation increases.

The artificial intelligence company said the proposed allocation, which requires shareholder approval, would support initiatives addressing the effects of AI on employment and society, alongside other public-benefit efforts.

Under the plan, the fund would receive an additional 2 percent of Anthropic’s shares at the board’s discretion for every 50 percent increase in the company’s value above a set baseline. The structure is designed to allow funding for public-benefit work to grow alongside the business.

Anthropic said the new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund would give it greater flexibility to support initiatives beyond its existing work in AI safety and biomedical research, as well as discounts for nonprofit organizations and scientific institutions. The fund could make large donations to established nonprofits or provide direct financial support to specific groups.

The announcement comes as concerns grow about AI’s potential effects on jobs and labor markets. Anthropic has warned that while the technology could generate substantial economic value, it could also create instability for many workers.

The company has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing disruptions to the labor market caused by AI. The new fund could provide resources for larger efforts to manage those changes.

Anthropic also said that, when combined with earlier commitments from its founders and employees, roughly 20 percent of its shares would be dedicated to public-benefit purposes. That figure could rise further if the company reaches specified valuation milestones.

The fund will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company, giving it flexibility in how it distributes resources. Anthropic said the equity held by the fund would not be used for lobbying or political contributions.

The company said it’ll disclose more information about the fund’s governance and valuation milestones in the coming months.
